Harrison’s Cave History

Harrison’s Cave is named after Thomas Harrison, a prominent landowner in the area during the 18th century, although he never explored the cave himself. Local legends and folklore spoke of the cave’s existence long before it was officially discovered. It wasn’t until the early 1970s that serious efforts were made to explore and develop the cave for public viewing.

The modern discovery and exploration of Harrison’s Cave can be attributed to Ole Sorensen, a Danish speleologist, who recognized the potential of this natural wonder. His detailed explorations and surveys, conducted in the early 1970s, revealed the cave’s extensive network of underground passages and breathtaking formations. The Barbados government, seeing the potential for a major tourist attraction, initiated a project to develop the cave for public tours.

The development of Harrison’s Cave as a tourist attraction was a significant engineering and conservation effort. The project involved constructing accessible pathways, installing lighting to highlight the cave’s natural beauty, and ensuring that the delicate formations were preserved. In 1981, Harrison’s Cave officially opened to the public, and it quickly became one of Barbados’ most popular attractions.

Since its opening, Harrison’s Cave has continued to evolve, with ongoing conservation efforts and the introduction of new visitor experiences. The cave is now equipped with a tram system that allows visitors to comfortably explore its depths, making it accessible to people of all ages and mobility levels.
